Where is Chincoteague Island?
Located on Virginia's coast, Chincoteague Island is Virginia's gateway to Assateague Island, home of the famous Chincoteague Ponies. Since the 1947 publication of Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague, millions of visitors have come to these barrier islands in search of the wild ponies. Since 1925, the ponies have been rounded up each July to swim across Chincoteague Bay from Assateague Island to the small town of Chincoteague.
It was no surprise to us that, in the summer of 2010, AOL Travel named Chincoteague Island as America's Number 1 Beach Town!
We are a small, family-friendly island, with charming inns, delicious seafood, ice cream parlors, and activities for kids of all ages. Chincoteague also offers a surprisingly active schedule of cultural events.
Nearby Assateague offers pristine beaches and wildlife trails as part of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore.
